Downend Christmas Tree Lighting Up Event

Santa was given a rapturous welcome when he arrived in Downend on Friday 26th November, as he made his way to the 'Grotto' outside the Horseshoe - just as the pupils from Christ Church Infants were about to sing their Christmas songs followed by St. Augustine's and Bromley Heath Schools.

The Salvation Army Band played for us from 6 - 7pm, when we could all join in with the Christmas Carols and at 6.30pm our beautiful tree was switched on by Olivia Harris and Travis Alabanza-Behard, two students from Downend School.

During the evening we collected £244 for our nominated charity, CLIC Sargent (Cancer & Leukaemia in Children) so we would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

Sixteen shops/businesses remained open until 7pm from the Downend Business Community (DBC), who also organised a Treasure Hunt for the children. Out of the cards dropped in the 'mail-box' 78 were completed and two winners were picked out, who will be receiving a prize from the DBC.

Everyone so enjoyed themselves and with the addition of a good sound system, enormous help from all at Motaman (who very kindly allowed us to use their electricity supply) - it was a wonderful evening.

With our Christmas Event growing year on year, we will be thinking a little bigger for 2012 - so watch this space.....

Downend & Bromley Heath Parish Council would also like to thank Amanda Morris from Downend, Mangotsfield and Emersons Green Matters Magazine for judging the 'Best Dressed Christmas Window Competition'.  Amanda was particularly impressed with the window display at Hazel Holly - congratulations to Hazel who has received the prize of a hamper (from Melanie's Kitchen).  The photo below shows Councillor Graeme Riley (Chairman) awarding Hazel with her prize!
