Join in the Jubilee Fun!
Local libraries will soon be hosting a range of childrens' crafts activities with a Right Royal theme:
· Downend library: 10.00am – 12noon - Thursday 7 June
· Staple Hill library: 10.30am – 12noon - Friday 8 June
Advice for the visually impaired
Technology can make a huge difference to those with sight problems. Learn more on Monday 18 June at Downend library when from 2.00pm - 4.00pm there will be an opportunity to find out about zero and low cost access to computers as well as demonstrations of e-readers, e-audio and other devices.
This event is being held as part of “Make a Noise in libraries” (MANIL) an annual campaign bringing public libraries and blind and partially sighted people together to improve access to books and information.
Coffee mornings @ the library
Downend library holds regular coffee mornings on a Friday morning from 10.30am – 11.30am. On 1 June why not come along and celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee!
The following speakers will be talking and meeting people at future coffee morning:
A Day in the life of Dale the dog: 10.30am Friday 15 June
A representative from Guide Dogs (formerly Guide Dogs for the Blind) will talk about the work of the Charity and how we can support it. Guide dog user, Martin, will then share his experiences of the practicalities of day to day living with Dale, his canine companion.
My story - by Linda Sullivan: 10.30am Friday 22 June
Downend resident Linda has recently written her autobiography “A Soldier at Last”. Come along and find out how Linda published her story; share her memories and learn how the Salvation Army became such an important part of her life.
150 years of retail in Staple Hill
Roger Angerson presents an illustrated account of the development of Staple Hill as a popular shopping destination. The talk takes place at 7.30pm at Staple Hill library, on Wednesday 20 June. Tickets cost £2.60 from any South Gloucestershire library.
Summer Reading Challenge
Coming soon to a library near you - Story Lab, the Summer Reading Challenge in libraries!
With 780,000 children aged 4-11 taking part, the Summer Reading Challenge is the biggest national reading initiative. The challenge begins in local libraries on July 14 and runs until September 16 with incentives, activities and events designed to create a real buzz around children's reading. The challenge is simple - to read six or more library books over the summer. Local libraries are also holding free Storylab activities throughout the holiday:
